Arkansas White River

Trout Unlimited Chapter 698

Dry Run Creek Fishing Platform Steps

Chapter member Steve Blumreich , youth fly fishing mentor on DRC, has suggested that the access to the creek on the downstream side of the fishing platforms needs improvement. On a busy fish-catching day mentors step down from the platform for fish netting numerous times and then back up to the platform to assist their angler. The accesses as they exist place a lot of wear and tear on the mentor, with a risk of injury.

Steve contacted Eli Powers, AG&FC Trout Habitat Biologist, to look at the platforms and suggest a stream access improvement. On the day of Eli’s visit to DRC he suggested aluminum steps that would be attached to the platforms in such a way that they would swing up during high water events and not back up flotsam that could damage the platforms. A railing attached to the existing walkway railing would provide additional comfort and safety to fishing platform users. It was decided that the steps would benefit users of three of the DRC fishing platforms.

A conceptual drawing of the steps was presented at a Friends of the Norfork National Fish Hatchery Board meeting. Besides the FNNFH Board , Bill Thorne TU Chapter 698 President, Mike Tipton NAFF Board member and Davy Wotton former President of FNNFH were in attendance. After some discussion it was decided that the three set of steps would be a good addition to DRC and the FNNFH Board agreed that their organization would pay the $900 cost for the project.

It is anticipated that the installation of the steps will begin after mid-September.
